Excess Stomach Acid Can Cause Acid Reflux Disease
Excess acid in the stomach if not corrected may lead to Acid Reflux Disease, commonly referred to as Gerd ( Reflux Disease). This condition is developed when the liquid contents in your stomach refluxes into the esophagus. If this liquid contains excess stomach acid it can cause inflammation and possible damage to the lining of the esophagus.
The digestive process of breaking down protein is started in the stomach area by the enzyme pepsin. Over production of enzymes can start a chain reaction of acid back flow. Excess stomach acid that is regurgitated can also contain bile that backs-up from the duodenum which connects the small intestines to the stomach.
Acid Reflux can develop into a chronic condition that may take quite some time to bring under control. When significant damage is done to the lining of the esophagus the condition becomes chronic. Once that happens treatment has to be administered on a continual basis or the problems will persist.
Normally, Acid Reflux happens when you are in a supine or lying down position due to the force of gravity is not holding back the reflux like it does when sitting or standing in an upright position.
When you are fully awake you swallow continually regardless Of Acid Reflux or not. Saliva, which is produced in the salivary glands, contains bicarbonate. Each and every time one swallows, the saliva containing bicarbonate travels through the esophagus.
Bicarbonate serves as a neutralizer in the small amount of acid that remains in the esophagus. As a matter of fact reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus takes place in most people. A recent study has shown reflux occurs as often in healthy individuals as it does in patients who are diagnosed with GERD.
In patients with GERD however, the refluxed liquid is excess stomach acid, and the acid remains in the esophagus for longer periods of time. Some conditions can lead directly to a person being vulnerable to acid reflux. A person who has GERD for example, can also have elevated hormone levels.
The human body has certain ways of protecting itself from the ill effects of excess stomach acid but left untreated those mechanisms just get overwhelmed and that causes an ongoing condition reflux.
